CAUSE Sierra Leone Program

CAUSE Canada has been active in Sierra Leone, West Africa since 1989. Our activities in that country have focused largely on refugee assistance. We have, however, implemented numerous potable water and primary health care projects in the country. It is interesting to note that throughout Sierra Leone's eight year civil war CAUSE Canada has remained operational. Our organization's commitment to the people of Sierra Leone is very strong.
It now seems that the war is over and the people of Sierra Leone are working very hard at putting the trauma of the past eight years behind them. CAUSE Canada is supporting this initiative and seeking to make a meaningful contribution to the peace process.
A Summary of Current Projects
Rehabilitation and Reintegration of
War Amputees and Children Impacted by War
This project endeavors to promote an atmosphere in Sierra Leone conducive to sustainable peace. Children impacted by war need to receive psycho-social counseling so they can adapt to peacetime society. Vocational training will help to ensure that they become contributing members of their communities.
Amputees require counseling in order to peacefully come to terms with their disabilities. Occupational therapy will help foster in these victims a new hope for the future. This type of rehabilitation will help them to once again become productive community members, and this will hopefully lay a foundation that will help them to forgive their former adversaries.
Bo Displaced Persons Centre
This intervention by CAUSE Canada involves the construction of temporary shelters for 1,500 families (9,000 persons) in approved campsites. This will enable the displaced persons move from open camps, schools and clinics to proper campsites with adequate shelter.
The campsites also make adequate provision for the supply of safe water, proper sanitation and the supply of food rations. This will in turn contribute to the reduction of malnutrition and deaths from preventable diseases especially among children under five years of age.
Each family head receives a set of non-food items including sleeping mats/mattresses and household utensils including cooking pots. Priority will be given to female-headed households who sleep in the open or occupy clinic and school buildings. Each family is allocated a shed in the new campsite.
Lungi Immunization Program
CAUSE Canada’s program will provide training and logistical support for the restoration of primary health care in Lungi. Emphasis will be placed on Health Education for Traditional Birth Attendants and Village Health Workers as well as training to reinforce the immunization program.
The overall target of the project is to provide a 90% immunization coverage under-ones against the five major childhood diseases.
